Thinking of starting CrossFit? Here’s what you need to know!

You don’t need to be fit/strong to join

Almost every time I speak to someone interested in CrossFit they say to me ‘I just need to get fitter before I start’. This is a huge misconception – as with every sport the media attention it gets will always focus on the elite athletes and yes you will see ripped guys and girls on the TV in magazines etc doing CrossFit. The reality is though that you will join a class with all levels of athletes (yes – even brand new members are called athletes) and each workout is scaled to your ability. You will learn all of the movements in a great team environment. When I started CrossFit I didn’t even know what a kettlebell was!

You don’t need any fancy sports gear or equipmentScreen Shot 2015-08-28 at 1.53.27 PM

Regular workout clothes and runners are just fine for CrossFit, there is no need to go out and buy any special workout gear. In saying that I do find going out and treating yourself to some shiny, fresh new workout gear is the ultimate in motivation but you definitely don’t NEED to do this. Penneys do really nice leggings, tanks and even runners so no need to break the bank. In terms of equipment your CrossFit box will have everything you could possibly need!

The beauty of CrossFit is that you get to work out with a group of people and there is a real community spirit encouraged amongst members. Be sure to introduce yourself to people – and get ready for the influx of friendly faces welcoming you and cheering you on. You can be sure of invites to team bbq’s, surf trips and WOD Holidays and you will definitely make loads of new friends!

EAT!  Screen Shot 2015-08-28 at 1.59.06 PM

Your new workouts will require lots of energy and to get the very best out of your time you need to make sure you are fuelling your body! Don’t be afraid of carbs, good carbs like sweet potatoes and rice give you the energy you will need to smash your workouts and eat lots of protein to repair the muscles you will be using on a daily basis. Fad detoxes, juice diets and low carb diets don’t suit the intensive workouts you will perform in CrossFit so eat, eat lots, and enjoy it!!

You’re not going to get ‘too muscular’

Screen Shot 2015-08-28 at 1.52.08 PMGirls often tell me they are worried about lifting weights as they will get ‘bulky’ or too muscular. This just isn’t going to happen. Number one – girls don’t produce the right hormones to get to that ‘bulky’ size they are scared of and number two – getting a ripped/muscular body requires years of hard work, dedication and strict diet plans. In real life CrossFit will make you more toned, reduce your body fat and you will become fitter but it will not give you that muscular physique you’re afraid of – to get that you are going to need to seriously commit to and follow a plan that has that particular goal in mind.

Ask Questions! Screen Shot 2015-08-28 at 2.02.19 PM

CrossFitters love to talk to about CrossFit!! Ask as many questions as you want, talk to other members, talk to your Coaches, ask anyone everything! This is how you will learn and there is no such thing as a ‘stupid question’. Every single member was new at one time in their lives and we all know how it feels to not understand something, I’m yet to visit a CrossFit box where the Coaches and members have been anything other than helpful and happy to answer any questions I may have.

kettlebelleHave fun!
The one and only way to stay motivated and interested in exercise is by finding something you enjoy doing. Getting fit and healthy shouldn’t be a chore it should be a pleasure. The CrossFit Community does everything possible to make sure that you are having fun while working out – the team environment and the ‘buzz’ of a CrossFit box is something I’m yet to find in any other sport. Make sure you let loose, enjoy yourself and the process – as they say ‘fitness is a lifestyle not a destination’ so enjoy the journey!!!
