God I really don’t know where to start with this! Actually maybe I do – I would like to point out first that this is ACRO yoga not AQUA yoga – Im telling you this because I mentioned it to my Crossfit Coach the other day and his response was “wtf?? my mum does that, what’s wrong with you, are you injured?” – he was talking about yoga in a swimming pool….
Annnywayyy – not only was I not injured but I had no idea what I was in for other than the fact that I was going to be upside down alot and that when I Google’d it I decided I should probably say a prayer for my safety and leave my pride at the door!
I arrived at Orla McAdam’s Zenergy Yoga in Co Louth and was suitably apprehensive, this was not the usual throwing big weights around and doing 150 burpees for time! Nooo, this was calm and peaceful and friendly and the room smelt amazing!!!!!!! Everyone was sooo ‘Zen’
What I learnt over the next four hours was that Acro Yoga is a mix of partner acrobatics, Thai massage, and yoga. Essentially, it builds a practice of the understanding of trust. Trust within the body, trust within the community, and trust in the fact that it’s a lot of fun to do these amazing things you never thought you’d be able to do!
I had the absolute time of my life and cant wait to do this again, I felt empowered and confident of how strong my body actually is, I faced the fear a number of times when placed upside down in the arms/legs/knees of people I had never met before – knowing one false move and I was on my head and they trusted me back, this is rare now-a-days, it felt great!
I would highly recommend an Acro yoga workshop or class if you really feel like doing something exhilarating and want a huge confidence boost!
PS: every muscle in my body ached the next day – proof of the strength required to practice these moves correctly.
